Ive bought 8 of the movie paks and I really enjoy them. Some are a little crappy, but most are just fine. The silents and some of the earlier movies star people that lived during the civil war. These are not HD but, they are fascinating to watch and to check out whats going on in the background.They are a bargain and just great for any old movie buff.

Not really going to talk about how "good or bad" these movies are (acting/scripts/etc). Personally, I like movies like "Meet John Doe".

Instead what I want to do is make a couple of comments about this package of movies that I think many of the other reviewers overlooked:

1 - The packaging of the discs - the package I got consisted of a box with 12 individual cardboard sleeves, each with a single DVD inside. Personally I like this as it seems to have kept the discs secure during shipment. Ive bought other multi-disc sets and have never been that impressed with how they were shoe-horned into a single huge clam-shell case. Another thing that I like about the slim sleeves that these discs come in - it makes it really easy to drop one or two of these movies into the pocket of my laptop and/or my portable DVD player case. Also on the sleeves is a short description of each movie - in a very readable 12-pt font.

2 - The number of discs, there are twelve double-sided discs in this collection, with two movies on each side. Why do I think that is important? Mainly because Ive bought other sets where a cheaper publisher crammed five movies onto each disc side so as to get 50 movies on five discs. To do that they had to greatly compress the videos which made them have a huge amount of artifacts and pixilation - making them almost unwatchable. The movies on this 12-disc set are of excellent quality, at least as good as possible considering the source material. While there appears to have been some defects in the prints used (scratches and whatnot) there doesnt seem to be any noticeable additional problems introduced from overly compressing the films to get them on the DVDs.

This is the third set of videos from Mill Creek Entertainment that Ive purchased I also bought their "Drive-In Classics" and "Cartoon Classics" collections. I must say that Ive been very pleased with all three sets and look forward to buying more of their collections.

The several genres here span six decades of cinematic history and this diversity alone makes for an interesting box set. The extensive roster of actors in these fifty movies is also quite unique. When buying 50 movies for pocket change you cant expect much. So Id say I got more than my moneys worth.
There are some of the movies that were captivating with good story lines and acting. Some of the movies were quirky but interesting to see how the art of film has changed over the years. And some of the movies I didnt get past the first 10 minutes.
Ranging from the silent era right up to the 1970s with the focus mostly in the 1930s, dont expect digital picture quality or dts 5.1 sound. While not impossible, there is noise in both the picture and sound, coming from old prints. Roughtly 3/4 of them are black and white.
In all, worth your time and money. But youll get your best value for your time and money if you PLAN on being selective and skipping some of the 50.

I wasnt expecting to get a top notch selection of musicals. Many are a little on the dull side, a few are even confusing, but there are some real gems in this collection. At less than $1 a piece, Id say, if you enjoy old movies and have the patience to sort the good from the bad, youll find hours of enjoyment in the set. Pay particular attention to Jane Powells film "Delightfully Dangerous". It is just great!

Incomplete Versions

If youre thinking of getting this collection for a specific film, be sure to double check that this is the complete version. Some of the films included in this set were taken from shortened prints, made back in the day when these were played on regular TV and had to fit in to a certain time slot. Others seem to be as good as theyll ever look.

For example, the film "People Are Funny" is 87 minutes here, not 93. Another, worse, example is for "Dixiana." Not only is it also 87 minutes and not the original 100 minutes, but the 2-Strip Technicolor sequence originally at the end is presented B&W on this edition. The missing footage includes the entire classic dance routine by Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, as well as the climax to the plot between the hero and the villain.

For the price there are still some good films to be had here, and its good to see so many familiar actors in one sitting. However, as in many of these Public Domain collections, some prints might not be the ones you want to have as your own personal "definitive" editions.

If you then wish to compliment or note your displeasure re the handling of the product by the vendor..find and good.

Most of the movies are not well known. The cover gives the impression that Fred Astaire will be in many of the movies hes not and to see cast names you must actually start the dvd, there isnt a written movie guide. Im sure a few of the movies will be good but so far no luck.

Some of the movies are very old and hard to have a clear picture, and I would have a list of the movies included before I purchased it. This is the only thing that came up when I put the title of the movie Margie, but Margie is not included.

Unless youre really bored theres not many of these Id really recommend. Id say only about 10 movies are worth the time. But that is really a matter of taste and what you are comparing it to. They play well and are in good condition and cheap.

I ordered this because I wanted the family classic movie "Snowfire" and this came up when I asked for Snowfire so I assumed it was included in the movies offered but it wasnt. That really disappointed me. I feel if a video with numerous movies on it comes on the screen when you ask for a specific title, that title should be included. There was no way to really tell because all the movies included were not listed.

While this was a shot in the dark, it proved to be a good one. I read the reviews first which proved very helpful and so far watched 2 movies from the pack. I suspect I will get through them all this winter. The quality is as expected with the older ones..a tad grainy and fuzzy but thats what makes old movies fun. I get the feeling I am there in the time without all the high gloss of todays grand "events". For the great price I was able to buy several films I wanted in my collection plus at least 30 others I never herad of! If some are not stellar, so what? You cant go wrong with this collection if you see at least 2 movies you want in the pack.

It may not throw off much light, but the inside of the bowl is glazed so it reflects colors on the white ceiling. I feel the design is stunning, for a basement refinish project with nice rustic colors. Its definitely a mood piece. We are moving and Im trying to find another one on-line, or Ill have to find a substitute and take this one with me!

Quality is not what I would have expected. The "oil rubbed bronze" is a painted on finish that is easily chipped. I bought this unit for less than $100. What they are charging now, $165, is definitely too much. I have purchased other Hunter fans, notably the Paramount XP, and was expecting better. Also, as a note, the light kit uses three 40 watt candelabra bulbs and, due to the dark brown of the glass, is totally useless for anything other than a night light.
